ENGINEER EXTRA LIST GUARANTEE

This guarantee is payable to all engineers irregardless of when you hired out. While the train service extra lists are also considered ‘guaranteed’, the payments are only applicable to pre-1991 trainmen. Below are excerpts from our past newsletters on this subject. Eventually we plan to have the guarantee forms available for download. ************************************************************************************************

All Engineer Extra Lists are guaranteed. The guarantee is for a fourteen day period which runs from a Saturday to a Friday. The guarantee amount for the fourteen day period is $2592.00 or $184.50 a day for the applicable time up to the 15 day period. Entry rates, i.e. 85, 90 and 95 percent, will be applied to this amount.

If you miss no work during this period you are entitled to be paid the difference between what you actually earned and this guarantee amount. If you are marked off sick, family emergency, without permission, etc., your guarantee will be docked only the amount of the earnings you miss. If you loose no work while marked off, you will not have your guarantee penalized. Also, when you mark back up, you will be placed back on the extra list in the same relative position where you stood before you marked off. In other words, if you were five times out when you marked off sick, were off three days but only two jobs had been called during your absence, you would mark back up three times out and no penalty would be assessed against your guarantee. If, however, you miss a job, you would mark back up to the foot of the board and your guarantee would be docked the amount of the lost earnings.

When you are paid for Personal Days, Vacation or Bereavement Leave; that money is separate and apart from the extra board guarantee. For guarantee purposes you will be considered as not available on the extra list and your guarantee will be pro-rated for the remaining days that you were on the list. Jury Pay, however, is considered compensation for guarantee purposes and you are considered available on those days with jury pay counting towards the guarantee calculation..

To claim the guarantee you must fill out a form (click here) and fax (540-855-6493 or MW: 7-855-6493) it to the the payroll department. There is typically a four-week lag after the close of the guarantee week until the payment is made. If you would like the payment made sooner, you can make a “Miscellaneous Claim” using code ‘GB’ for each day that you are available but have no earnings Each GB claims pays $184.82 (at 100%) or $2587.48 per 14 day cycle. Use Class of Rate Code 25 and claim eight hours. This is also routed to Payroll who can be reached at (540) 855-6878 (M/W is 7-855-6878). There is also a toll free number that can be used: (800) 624-4193, ext. 6878. Please note that the GB claims will be paid in the current payroll irrespective of entitlement! If you claim too much money, it will be taken back a few weeks later. Similarly, if you don't submit the GB claim or claim less than you are entitled to, you will receive the correct payment in approximately four weeks after the end of the guarantee period. Failure to fax in the claim form will result in any GB payments being taken back. Also, train service extra lists are not guaranteed for post-1991 employees.
